IIT Bombay US Sub-Campus: Partnership with SUNY

IIT Bombay has taken a significant step by announcing its first-ever sub-campus outside India. This new initiative is in partnership with the State University of New York at Old Westbury on Long Island, New York.

IIT Bombay’s First Expansion to the United States

The new sub-campus will focus on creating fresh opportunities in education and research. IIT Bombay plans to build the engineering education wing for SUNY Old Westbury and begin with certificate courses in 2027. Over time, the institutions aim to introduce full degree programmes for students from across the world, including learners from India and the United States. The academic focus will include science, engineering, physics, and fast-growing fields like artificial intelligence.

Research, Faculty Exchange and Academic Collaboration

Before full degree programmes are launched, both institutions will begin with early-stage academic cooperation. This will include visits and exchanges of faculty members and researchers. The partnership will also encourage both institutes to work together on research projects and organise conferences and academic events. These activities will help them strengthen their academic foundation and create new opportunities for future growth.

Strong Support from Indian Leadership

The new partnership has received appreciation from senior leaders. Ambassador Vinay Kwarta said that the collaboration is an important step towards strengthening academic and technology relations between India and the United States. Higher Education Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi said that the partnership marks an important milestone in the growing education relationship between India and the United States. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also appreciated the new partnership by saying that this initiative follows the goals of NEP 2020 and will help Indian Education reach more students around the world.
