The ESE selection process is distinctive because Prelims marks are included in the final merit. This means every stage contributes to your rank. Candidates are placed as Group-A Gazetted Officers (Assistant Executive Engineers) in prestigious central government technical departments.
Stage-by-Stage Selection
- Stage 1 – Prelims: 2 papers (500 marks). Shortlists ~6–7 times vacancies per branch for Mains. Marks carry forward to final merit.
- Stage 2 – Mains: 2 conventional technical papers (600 marks). Deep technical problem-solving tested. Shortlists ~2 times vacancies for interview.
- Stage 3 – Personality Test: 200 marks before UPSC Board. Tests technical communication, project understanding, and personality.
- Final Merit: Based on Prelims (500) + Mains (600) + Interview (200) = 1300 marks total.
