The Group D selection has 3 stages. CBT determines merit; PET and Medical are qualifying. The process spans approximately 10–14 months from notification to joining.

Stage-by-Stage Selection

  • Stage 1 – CBT: 100 questions, 90 minutes. Multi-shift exam with normalization. Shortlists top 3× vacancy candidates (per category) for PET.
  • Stage 2 – PET: Physical fitness test at designated Railway Sports grounds. Pass/fail based on running and weight carry standards. Pregnant women and Ex-Servicemen exempt.
  • Stage 3 – DV + Medical: Document verification of originals followed by Medical examination at Railway Hospital. Final posting order based on CBT merit rank.

Q.How is department allocation done after Group D selection?

Department allocation is based on CBT merit rank, department-wise vacancies in each RRB zone, and candidate preference submitted at the time of Document Verification. Higher-ranked candidates get their preferred department/posting station filled first.

Q.Can a Group D employee get promoted to Group C?

Yes. Group D (Level 1) employees can be promoted to Group C (Level 2 and above) through Departmental Competitive Examinations (GDCE) conducted by Railways after a minimum of 3 years of service. Many Group D employees progress to Track Maintainer Grade III, III, and higher over time.
