Staff Selection CommissionGraduate (Hindi/English Masters preferred) medium

The SSC JHT selection process has two paper stages followed by document verification. Since Paper II is merit-determining, translation and writing quality are the most critical factors for final selection. The overall timeline from notification to joining typically spans 12–18 months.

Stage-by-Stage Selection

  • Stage 1 – Paper I (CBT): Held online at SSC designated centres. 200 marks (qualifying). SSC declares post-wise and category-wise minimum qualifying marks. Only candidates meeting Paper I cutoff proceed to Stage 2.
  • Stage 2 – Paper II (Descriptive): Pen-and-paper exam at designated centres. 200 marks (merit-determining). Tests translation from English to Hindi, Hindi to English, Essay in Hindi, and Précis writing. Final merit is based exclusively on Paper II performance.
  • Stage 3 – Document Verification (DV): Selected candidates are called for DV where original certificates (degree, age, category, etc.) are verified. Appointment order is issued post-DV.

No. Paper I is entirely qualifying. Final merit, ranking, and allocation are based 100% on Paper II marks (200 marks).

Q.How are candidates allocated to specific ministries in SSC JHT?

Ministry allocation is done by SSC/DoPT based on merit rank, vacancies in each ministry/office, and candidate preference submitted during document verification. Higher-ranked candidates get their preferred ministries filled first.

Q.Is there a probation period after SSC JHT appointment?

Yes. JHT officers typically serve a 2-year probation period in their assigned ministry after appointment. Confirmation as permanent government servant is done after successful probation completion.

Q.Can a JHT officer transfer between ministries?

Yes. JHT officers can apply for inter-ministry transfers after completing the mandatory service period (typically 3–5 years in the initial posting ministry). Transfers are subject to ministry approval and DoPT guidelines.
