Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Are written exam marks included in the CDS final merit?

Yes. Written exam and SSB carry equal weightage. For IMA/INA/AFA: Written (300) + SSB (300) = 600. A high written score directly improves your final rank.

Q.Is there a separate written exam cutoff before SSB?

Yes. UPSC shortlists candidates based on written exam merit for SSB. Typically, 3–4 times the vacancies per academy are shortlisted. Candidates below the written cutoff are not called for SSB.

Q.What does the 5-day SSB assess?

SSB assesses Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) through psychological tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SDT), Group Tasks (GD, GPE, Outdoor Group Tasks), Personal Interview, and a final Conference on Day 5.

Q.Is there a minimum score required in each CDS paper separately?

UPSC applies an internal minimum qualifying threshold per paper. Very poor performance in any single paper (e.g., Mathematics below minimum) can disqualify even if total marks are above the cutoff. Aim for at least 40% in each paper.
