UPSC CMS 2026 eligibility requires an MBBS degree from a recognized institution. The age limit is higher than most UPSC exams (up to 32 for General), acknowledging the longer duration of medical education.

Nationality

Candidates must be a citizen of India. Subjects of Nepal/Bhutan and persons of Indian origin from specified countries with intent to settle in India are also eligible subject to government clearance.

Additional Eligibility Conditions

  • Minimum age: No minimum age prescribed (unlike defence exams); effectively linked to MBBS completion age

  • Candidates registered with a State Medical Council under the Indian Medical Degrees Act are eligible

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Can a candidate with only BHMS or BAMS apply for UPSC CMS?

No. UPSC CMS requires an MBBS degree recognized by NMC (National Medical Commission). Candidates with BHMS (Homoeopathy), BAMS (Ayurveda), or other alternative medicine degrees are not eligible.

Q.Is NMC registration mandatory at the time of application?

Registration with a State Medical Council or NMC is required. Candidates who have completed MBBS but are awaiting registration can apply, but must produce the registration certificate before joining service.

Q.Can doctors serving in private hospitals apply for CMS?

Yes. Any MBBS doctor meeting age and qualification criteria can apply regardless of current employment – private, public, or unemployed. There is no NOC (No Objection Certificate) requirement at the application stage.

Q.What is the age cut-off date for CMS 2026?

Age is calculated as on 1st January 2026 for CMS 2026. This differs from CSE (1st August) and ESE (1st January). Always verify the exact cut-off date from the official CMS 2026 notification on upsc.gov.in.
