The UPSC IFoS syllabus is divided into two stages. The Prelims syllabus is identical to the UPSC CSE Prelims. The Mains syllabus is entirely science/forestry-specific and differs completely from CSE Mains.

Q.Which two optional subjects are most popular for IFoS Mains?

Forestry + Botany and Forestry + Zoology are the most chosen combinations due to high syllabus relevance to the IFS role. Agriculture + Botany is also common.

Q.Is the General Knowledge paper in IFoS Mains different from CSE GS?

Yes. While there is overlap with GS topics, IFoS GK paper has dedicated sections on forest policy, wildlife laws, environmental acts, and forestry-specific issues not covered in CSE GS papers.

Q.Can I choose Forestry as both optional subjects?

No. Forestry can be chosen as only one of the two optionals. Candidates must select two different subjects from the approved list.

Q.Is there a Personality Test (Interview) in IFoS?

Yes. Candidates who qualify IFoS Mains appear for a Personality Test of 200 marks before UPSC Board. The final merit is based on Mains (1400) + Interview (200) = 1600 marks.
