RRB ALP 2026 Eligibility – Age, ITI Trades and A1 Medical Standard

RRB ALP 2026

Railway Recruitment Board10th Pass + ITI / Diploma / Degree in Engineering medium

ALP eligibility is stricter than almost any other Group C railway examination — and the strictness is not limited to educational qualification. The A1 medical standard creates an eligibility gate that operates independently of exam performance, eliminating candidates who have invested years of preparation but carry undetected colour vision deficiencies.

Educational Qualification

Class 10 Pass + ITI in approved engineering trade (NCVT/SCVT)ALP + Technician Grade III (trade-specific posts)Trade must appear in RRB's approved list for that cycle

BE/BTech in relevant engineering branchALP + Technician Grade IIIOverqualified but not disqualified; applies in lieu of ITI

Eligible ITI Trades for ALP (Common Trades)

The approved trade list is published in the official notification. Common eligible trades include: Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Wireman, Fitter, Turner, Machinist, Diesel Mechanic, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Refrigeration and AC Mechanic, Instrument Mechanic, Mechanic Radio and TV, Armature and Coil Winder, Heat Engine Mechanic, Tractor Mechanic. Non-engineering trades (Welder, Carpenter, Draughtsman Civil, Plumber, Cutting and Sewing) are not typically eligible for ALP posts. Always verify against the official notification before applying.

Medical Standard A1 – ALP Requirement

ALP requires the strictest railway medical standard: A1. Requirements include: distant vision 6/6 in both eyes (without spectacle correction in most assessments), complete absence of colour vision deficiency, near vision Sn 0.6 per eye, no squint or diplopia, normal hearing, and overall physical fitness within blood pressure and blood glucose norms. Technician Grade III typically falls under B1 standard, which is substantially less restrictive — spectacle correction is permitted, colour vision is not universally required, and vision standards are relaxed.

Colour blindness is the most common A1 medical disqualifier for ALP. Even mild red-green deficiency fails the Ishihara plate test at the railway medical examination. There is no conditional pass, no repeat attempt, and no relaxation. Candidates should get this tested at a government hospital ophthalmology department before investing in ALP preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Can a BSc Physics graduate apply for RRB ALP 2026?

No. RRB ALP requires Class 10 + ITI in an approved engineering trade, or a Diploma/BTech in a relevant engineering branch. BSc degrees (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics) are not accepted for either ALP or Technician Grade III posts. Only engineering-oriented qualifications with the appropriate NCVT/SCVT recognition qualify. Candidates with BSc backgrounds may be eligible for RRB NTPC Graduate level posts, which have different qualification criteria.

Q.Does colour blindness disqualify a candidate from ALP even after clearing all written stages?

Yes, absolutely. ALP requires Medical Standard A1, which mandates normal colour vision — even mild red-green colour blindness is disqualifying. There is no waiver, no relaxation, and no appeal process for this condition. Candidates who clear CBT 1, CBT 2 Part A, Part B, and CBAT but fail the colour vision test at the A1 medical stage are not appointed as ALP. They may be considered for Technician Grade III subject to medical standard and post availability. Any candidate with doubt about their colour vision should get a formal Ishihara test done at a government hospital before committing to ALP preparation.

Q.Can a candidate holding both an ITI certificate and a Diploma choose which qualification to declare?

Yes. A candidate holding multiple eligible qualifications declares one in the application form. The declared qualification determines which Part B paper the candidate sits at CBT 2. ITI trade papers are typically narrower in scope than Diploma branch papers, which can make the 35% Part B qualifying threshold easier to achieve. Consider which qualification's Part B you can clear more comfortably — not necessarily the one you are most qualified in — when making this decision.
