ALP is not a destination — it is the entry point to one of the few government careers where years of active service genuinely translate into significantly higher income (through running allowance) and where the job title at career peak is meaningfully different from the entry level. Understanding what the role involves is as important as clearing the exam.

Post-Appointment Training
Selected ALP candidates are sent to Zonal Training Centres (ZTCs) for approximately 18–24 months of residential training covering locomotive operation principles, traction theory, railway operating rules, emergency procedures, and supervised driving under senior Loco Pilots. A stipend is paid during training but candidates are not on the full pay scale until formal deployment.

Annual Medical – The Ongoing Career Condition
A1 medical is not only an entry gate — ALP and Loco Pilots undergo periodic medical examinations throughout their careers. Frequency increases with age and seniority. Conditions like hypertension, diabetes above threshold, or significant vision deterioration mid-career can lead to transfer to non-operational duties (resulting in loss of running allowance) or, in serious cases, medical invalidation. This is a real career risk that experienced candidates factor into financial planning.
