The UPSC CSE selection process is a rigorous three-stage funnel. From approximately 10–12 lakh applicants, only around 900–1,000 candidates are finally recommended annually. Each stage is designed to progressively test knowledge, analytical depth, and personality.
Stage-by-Stage Process
- Stage 1 – Prelims: Two objective papers (GS-I + CSAT). Shortlists ~12,000–13,000 candidates for Mains based on GS-I score.
- Stage 2 – Mains: Nine descriptive papers over 5–7 days. Merit-determining stage. Approximately 2,000–2,500 candidates qualify for the interview.
- Stage 3 – Personality Test: Conducted by UPSC Board. Each interview lasts 20–45 minutes. Final merit list prepared from Mains + Interview combined score.
- Service Allocation: Based on rank + preferences submitted, candidates are allotted services under DoPT guidelines. IAS and IPS have the lowest cut ranks; Central Services have progressively higher cut ranks.
