CDS preparation requires a dual focus: written exam (4–5 months) and continuous personality and physical development for SSB. Since CDS is biannual, candidates have two attempts per year within their eligible age window.

Phase 1: Static Foundation (Month 1)

  • GK Static: Complete Lucent GK (History, Geography, Polity, Science). One chapter per day. Make 1-page notes per chapter.
  • English: Complete S.P. Bakshi grammar sections. Build vocabulary: 15 words/day from Norman Lewis.
  • Maths (IMA/INA/AFA): Revise NCERT Class 9–10 thoroughly. Arithmetic focus: Percentages, Ratio, Time-Work, SI/CI.
  • Physical Fitness: Start 2-km daily run, increase by 0.5 km/week. Add pull-ups and push-ups to daily routine.

Phase 2: Practice + Current Affairs (Month 2–3)

  • GK Current Affairs: Cover 12 months of defence, science, international events, government schemes. Manorama Yearbook + PIB.
  • English: 2 comprehension passages daily. Sentence correction and Para Jumbles practice.
  • Maths: Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration from R.S. Aggarwal. 20 questions/day.
  • Mock Tests: Take 2 full CDS mock tests per week. Analyse every wrong answer rigorously.

Phase 3: Final Revision + SSB Prep (Month 4)

  • Three complete revisions of all GK static notes using short summaries
  • Solve all available CDS PYQs (2015–2024) in timed conditions
  • Update current affairs to the current month

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.How many months of preparation are needed for CDS?

Candidates with a general awareness foundation can be ready in 3–4 focused months. Those starting from scratch may need 5–6 months, especially for GK current affairs coverage and Mathematics.

Q.Should I prepare for both CDS I and CDS II simultaneously?

Yes. Since CDS I and CDS II have the same syllabus, preparation for one is automatically preparation for the other. Update current affairs between the two cycles (typically September exam needs events covered till August).

Q.Is physical fitness preparation necessary before the written exam?

Start physical fitness from Day 1. SSB failures due to physical unfitness eliminate otherwise high-scoring candidates. The physical fitness tests at medical stage require sustained training over several months.

Q.Can CDS and NDA be prepared simultaneously?

NDA targets Class 12 students; CDS targets graduates – they serve different age groups. However, candidates in their final graduation year can appear for NDA until age 19.5 and transition to CDS preparation immediately after graduation.
